What To Wear To Your Family Photo Shoot - Style Guide
Does the thought of dressing everyone for family photos have you feeling stuck?
Well, don't you worry. I have you covered.
Below are some good principles to keep in mind when you’re choosing clothing for your family’s portrait session.
These are guidelines based on my experience of what clothing looks best in photographs; however, the most important thing is to choose clothing that you’re comfortable in and that represents you as a family.
I also have a blog post all about how to look good in your photos. Make sure you check that out too!
Don't
• Dress everyone in identical clothing.
• Choose clothes that are overly casual.
• Choose anything uncomfortable or that prevents free movement.
• Choose clothing with large logos or text.
• Choose bright white shirts.
• Choose more than one pattern.
Do
• Choose 2 or 3 colors and coordinate everyone around that.
• LAYER!!!! Layers photograph VERY well.
• Dress more formally than you normally would.
• Accessorize. Remember necklaces, bracelets, hair accessories, belts, etc.
• Consider wearing cream instead of white.
• Avoid too much contrast (ex. black and white.)

Pro Tips
*Choose outfits as if you were attending an upscale wedding.
*Choose colors that match your home decor so your portraits will look great hanging in your home.
*Avoid patterns. If someone does want to wear a pattern keep it to only one person. Everyone else should wear solids.
*Neutrals and pastels photograph best.
*To avoid looking washed out/tired in your photos, style your hair and makeup a bit heavier than you usually would.
*Wear nice shoes but bring walking shoes to travel around the photo shoot location.
Example #1
Neutrals with pastels.
Mixing soft cream tones with sparkle and light pastels.
Example #2
Mix casual (jeans) with formal (floor length dress.)
This creates an inclusive and diverse look.
Example #3
Bold colors that incorporate sparkle and formal accessories (bow tie, unique shoes.)
