Toddler-Approved Maternity Sessions: Tips and Tricks for Success
Pregnancy is a beautiful and magical time in a woman's life. It's a time when you are growing a tiny human inside of you, and you want to capture every moment of it. As a photographer who specializes in maternity photography in the Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Annapolis, Maryland, areas, I've had the pleasure of working with many expecting mothers. However, when it comes to toddlers, they can be notoriously hard to photograph. Toddlers have their own agenda, and guess what? They don’t care about yours! But I have found that spending just a few minutes at the beginning of the session playing and goofing around with my tiniest clients makes a world of difference. So, if you're worried about how to capture the perfect shot of your toddler during your maternity session, keep reading.
If you're looking for fun things to do with your toddler in the Baltimore, Annapolis area then I've got you covered for that too!
Make your Toddler Feel Comfortable
Little ones need more time to warm up to strangers. And they are much more likely to take some direction when they think you’re the coolest person around. That’s why I take as much time as I need to make your toddler feel comfortable before our session begins. I'll start by getting down to their level and talking to them. I'll show them my camera and let them touch it, so they know it's nothing to be scared of. By the time the session starts, your toddler will feel at ease with me, and we'll be able to get some amazing photos.
It's also important to keep in mind that toddlers have a short attention span, so I'll work quickly and efficiently to get the shots we need. If your toddler starts to get fussy or tired, we can take a break and come back to it later. Remember, the goal is to make this a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved.
Timing is key:
Let's schedule the session at a time when your toddler is usually well-rested and in a good mood. Try to have them nap well before the session, if it’s in the afternoon/evening, to minimize potential crankiness or meltdowns.
Communication is key:
Please let me know in advance about your toddler and any specific details or concerns you may have. This will help me prepare and adapt to their needs during the session.
Familiarity brings comfort:
Bring along your child's favorite toys, blanket, or any comfort items they adore. These familiar objects can help them feel at ease and create a relaxed atmosphere for beautiful photographs.
Choosing the perfect location:
Let's pick a location that provides a safe and comfortable environment for your toddler. Outdoor settings with plenty of space for them to explore and play are ideal, as they can enjoy themselves while I capture candid moments.
Interactive elements add fun:
I love incorporating activities or props that can engage your toddler during the session. Whether it's blowing bubbles, playing with balloons, or bringing a cherished stuffed animal, these interactive elements keep them entertained and help me capture genuine smiles and expressions.
Planned breaks and snacks:
Toddlers have short attention spans, so if needed, we can plan for breaks during the session. This will give your little one time to rest, have some water, or recharge, ensuring their cooperation throughout the shoot.
Making them part of the process:
Involving your toddler in decision-making can be a wonderful way to make them feel included. I'll encourage them to choose poses or interact with your baby bump, fostering their connection and enthusiasm during the session.
Patience and flexibility:
Working with toddlers requires patience and flexibility. I understand that not everything will go exactly as planned, but that's okay! Some of the most precious moments happen spontaneously, so we'll adapt and make the best of every situation.
An extra pair of hands:
Consider bringing a family member or friend who can assist with your toddler during the session. Having an extra set of hands can help capture your child's attention, provide comfort, or lend assistance when needed.
Keeping it light-hearted and fun:
Above all, let's keep the session light-hearted and fun! The goal is to capture the joy and love within your family. By creating a positive and relaxed atmosphere, we'll be able to create beautiful photographs that reflect the special bond you share.
In conclusion, maternity sessions are a wonderful opportunity to capture the beauty and magic of pregnancy. And with a little preparation and planning, you can capture some amazing photos with your toddler as well. I'm excited to work with you and your toddler to create unique and meaningful maternity portraits. Together, we'll make this session an enjoyable and unforgettable experience for your growing family!
